This is a photo from Lake Macquarie City Council's files. It is of the Arsenic Smelter Ruins at Awaba. These ruins are at the 'edge' of where the proposed mine is to be situated.The questions come to mind.....about arsenic leaching into the soil; what happens if the soil is disturbed; what about arsenic fallout and its consequences; what are the long term issues of this old smelter and the environment? The questions keep coming to mind!!
